Gutter Heat Tape For Roof Snow Melting Systems

Winter’s heavy snowfalls and icy build-up don’t just strain your roof. They can block your gutters, causing dangerous ice dams and damage.

This is why many homeowners choose roof snow-melting systems.

With the right gutter heat tape, you can keep your gutters free of ice, prevent water back-up, and protect your roof and home from winter damage.

Why Use Gutter Heat Tape?

Ice dams form when melted snow re-freezes at the roof’s edges and in gutters, blocking drainage and forcing water back under shingles.

This trapped water leads to damage, leaks, and structural issues.

Here’s where gutter heat tape comes in. It warms gutters just enough to melt away the ice, keeping water moving freely even in freezing temperatures.

Unlike fully heated roof systems that cover large areas, gutter heat tape offers targeted melting where you need it most—along your gutters and downspouts.

How To Install Gutter Heat Tape

Gutter heat tape is relatively easy to install as part of your roof snow melt system. With a little DIY know-how, you can do it yourself.

Our heat tapes are designed to be user-friendly, with simple, step-by-step instructions.

Here’s a brief look at what’s involved:

1. Measure and Plan

Measure the length of the gutters and downspouts to determine how much tape you need. Place tape along gutter edges, focusing on areas prone to ice buildup.

2. Secure the Tape

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure the tape using clips. Stay away from staples as these will damage your heat tape.

3. Connect Power Safely

Heat tape needs an electrical connection. Check that all your connections are weatherproof and safe for outdoor use.

4. Inspect

Check for wear and tear after each season to keep your electric ice melting system running smoothly.

How To Measure Gutters for Heat Tape

  • Measure the total length of all gutters where heat tape is needed. Use a tape measure to get an accurate reading in feet.
  • Measure each downspout from gutter to ground. Note their lengths separately, as you’ll need tape for these too.
  • If you have roof valleys, measure their length for complete coverage.
  • Add around 10% extra to account for turns, overlaps, and installation adjustments.
  • Add up the lengths of all gutters, downspouts, and valleys with the extra length. The total is how much heat tape you need in feet.

FAQs

The best snow melt for roofs is electric heat cables or gutter heat tape, which keeps snow and ice from forming without damaging the roof materials.

Installing gutter heat tape is a great preventive measure. By keeping gutters warm enough to avoid ice formation, it stops ice dams from forming and damaging your roof.

You can melt snow on your roof using electric roof heaters or heat tape along the gutters, which warm key areas and prevent ice build-up. These systems are easy to install and keep water flowing off the roof even in freezing temperatures.

Putting chemical ice melt directly on your roof is not recommended, as it can damage shingles and gutters.

To remove deep snow, use a roof rake with a long handle to carefully pull snow off the roof without climbing or risking damage. For heavy accumulations, consider hiring a professional.
